What Format Do Kindles Use?
When it comes to file formats that are supported on Kindle, the primarily and most popular is the AZW3, its a proprietary file format for Amazon that is based on the outdated MOBI format.
When you purchase a book from Amazon it is in the AZW format. Note that some AZW files might have a number, such as 1, 2, or 3, after AZW.
MOBI, is an another file format developed by Mobipocket, which is not only compatible but widely used Kindle Paperwhite book format.
For non-e-book files, Kindles also supports DOC and DOCX, PDF, TXT, HTML and HTM.

When it comes to EPUB there was a time when you had to convert them manually however now Kindles supports EPUB Indirectly.

How to Transfer EPUB to kindle via USB
If you send EPUBs directly to Kindle via USB they won’t show in your Kindle Library. In order to send it via USB you first have to convert the book into AWZ or Mobi format.

There are numerous online converters which convert EPUBs with just a single click. However, the issue with them is that first you need internet connectivity, the output might be not clearly formatted plus you cannot customize the output as per your preferences like in Calibre.

Send EPUB directly to Kindle via Send To Kindle
There are two ways to use this feature the first one is Find Your Kindle Email Address.
The first way is to do use Amazons’ send to kindle tool.
- Login to your amazon account and register your device with Amazon
- Use amazon.com/sendtokindle feature and send directly to your device
The second way is to send the EPUB via an email attachment.
- First you’ll need to have your email on the approved list in the “Approved Personal Document E-mail List”
- You can add your email in the “Preferences” section of your Amazon Account
- After that just use your regular email address to send EPUB to your Kindle account
With this feature you can send up to 25 attachments in one email and you can have up to 15 email addresses approved to send emails to your Kindle
The third way is to send the EPUB via an Amazon Desttop Application. Just download the “Send to Kindle” desktop application for your computer and send sync your Kindle with it. Just Drag and drop and it will be done.
