Design

The reMarkable, Scribe and Note Air 2 all have a tablet-like form factor and are quite similar in design. Notably, they feature bezels framing the displays, with a wider strip on the left side for more comfortable handling.

In terms of design the reMarkable 2 stands out probably because it thinner then rest of the devices and feels like more premium.

  • In weight Note Air 2 Plus is heavier (445g) when compared to Note Air 2 (420 g)
  • The aluminum frame gives the device a very premium feel when holding.

Kindle Scribe

  • The Scribe has a wider bezel on the left side, presumably because the Scribe is primarily designed as a reader
  • It weights more (433g) primarily due to its metal casing and glass screen.
  • The Scribe’s USB-C port and power button are located just off-centre on the left edge.

The pixel density, screen resolution, and screen size are the same for reMarkable and Note Air 2. Whereas the Kindle scribe has a slightly smaller screen but the highest PPI

The technology used for the screen is different for all three devices. reMarkable 2 Screen is made of Canvas technology giving it Pencil over paper like feel, Onyx boox has a Carta 1000 Screen and Kindle Scribe has Carta 1200 Screen.

In terms of writing the best display is of reMarkable 2 followed by Kindle Scribe. However Onyx Boox display has the best screen refresh rate, warm lights and better contrasts.

Stylus

The Remarkable 2 stylus needs to be purchased separately from the device. You can buy the standard marker or the Marker Plus.  Both the styluses have a very natural feel to them but are quite expensive.

The Kindle Scribe  also comes with the two type of pens. The Basic Pen and the Premium Pen. The hardware is same as the reMarkable but the writing experience is quite different.

The Onyx Boox Note Air 2 comes with the Boox Pen Plus Stylus in the box. All of the devices support 3rd Party stylus so  you can opt for any other stylus you want.

reMarkable 2

  • The standard Marker and the Marker Plus both are quite expensive.
  • Tilt detection & accurate pressure sensitivity makes I writing highly enjoyable.
  • The eraser tip at the end feels like real rubber and is really responsive on the marker plus.
  • The cardboard stylus tip give it that peculiar pencil over paper like feel but it requires frequent replacements.

Onyx Boox Note Air 2

  • The nib is made of soft plastic and has a nice feel while writing
  • The pen lacks a eraser but you can use alternate styluses as well.
  • Tilt detection & accurate pressure sensitivity makes the writing highly enjoyable.
  • Overall it has minimal lag and a useful range of stroke settings

Kindle Scribe

  • The basic pen is included at no additional cost, while the Premium Pen a bit expensive ,features an eraser and a shortcut button for switching between pen settings with a click.
  • The hardware is almost the same as that of reMarkable 2
  • The Tilt Function, Pressure sensitivity and the Latency are quite good.

Note Taking

In terms of note taking, the ReMarkable 2 offers a unique writing experience with a pencil over paper feel. The text recognition feature is exceptional and the Note Taking UI Minimalistic.

The Boox Note Air 2 provides a solid writing experience, with options to use various apps like Microsoft Word and powerpoint. Making it a powerful tool for 3rd Party note taking apps.

The Kindle Scribe provides a decent experience but the templates and pen options are quite limited but we are seeing an improvement after each update.

In the writing and note-taking category, the Boox Note Air 2 takes the lead for its unique writing experience, followed closely by the reMarkable 2, while the Kindle Scribe offers limited note taking features.

reMarkable 2

  • Offers 51 templates for  note-taking

  • The text recognition and conversion is great as well.

Kindle Scribe

  • The device offers notebooks, checklists, and layouts to help organize reading and notes. But the pages cannot be layered or tagged.
  • The Pen response is great but it doesn’t give a lot of flexibility in terms of pen tips and shades when it comes to writing.
  • You cannot write directly on the Books but you to add sticky notes to any book.
  • It doesn’t have handwriting recognition but we hope that it comes in the future.

Drawing and Artistic Abilities

For artists and those who enjoy drawing, the Remarkable 2 takes the lead with its excellent pen tools, including tilt sensitivity, layers, and export options. It offers a natural drawing experience similar to pencil on paper.

The Onyx Boox Note Air 2 focuses more on note-taking. The tilt function  and pressure sensitivity are great but the sketching feel seems unnatural. However this feeling can be quite subjective.

The Kindle Scribe has potential to do great as it has the same hardware as the reMarkable 2 but for now its sketching experience is quite average. Maybe it improves over a few updates.

In the drawing and artistic abilities category, the Remarkable 2 stands out for its advanced drawing features, followed by Kindle Scribe  and Boox Note Air 2.

Reading

When it comes to reading, the Kindle Scribe  stands out due to its Ecosystem. If you are already using a kindle then the shift will be really easy. You have access to a Kindle library as well as audibles. Overall its reading UI is far better then the other two devices.

The Onyx Boox with its google Play Store Support can let you download your favorite reading app. Plus its high refresh rate, customizable contrast, greyscale and warm lights make it an excellent reading device.

On the other hand, the Remarkable 2 is limited to reading EPUBs and PDFs, but it offers the unique feature of a Chrome extension that allows you to send web pages directly to the device for reading.

In the reading category, the Onyx Boox and Kindle Scribe both take the first spot whereas the Remarkable 2 offers a simple reading experience and lacks a lot of key features.

When it comes to organization, the Boox Note Air is highly customizable but comes with a steep learning curve.  However once you get used to it, you will find it quite convenient.

The Kindle Scribe offers a decent UI for note taking but a great UI when it comes to reading, with various organization options.

The Remarkable 2 provides a simple notebook experience, requiring users to manually organize their notes with clear headings for easy navigation.

In the organization category, the Boox Note Air takes the lead for its advanced features, followed by the Kindle Scribe, while the Remarkable 2 offers a more straightforward notebook-style organization

It’s a straightforward device that’s easy to learn and use, making it suitable for less tech-savvy individuals and the same goes for Kindle Scribe. In the ease of use category, the Remarkable 2 is the most user-friendly, followed by the Kindle Scribe, while the Boox Note Air 2 offers more features at the cost of some complexity.

Hardware & Software

The reMarkable 2 was launched in 2020 and the hardware is a bit outdated when compared to the other two devices but they still packs and punch. It has its own tailored Linux OS.  Which adopts a pared-back approach, with clean visuals, tidy menus and neat icons for switching tools.

The Kindle Scribe has a lesser processing power than both the devices but their tailored UI runs flawlessly.

On the other hand Onyx Boox Note Air 2 has a far superior hardware. The device runs on Android 11. Overall it resembles quite a lot to aa traditional tablet.
