reMarkable is probably the first name that pops up in our mind when we think about E Ink Tablets but its not the best device. We have alot of competitors and devices tailored for specific users and Quirk Logic Papyr is One of them

Quirk Logic Papyr on the the other hand, is a device that is highly centered around workbooks, providing a distraction-free environment for users. Design

Papyr and Remarkable 2 both have a tablet-like form factor and are equipped with greyscale E Ink screens. Both devices have rubber feet on the back to prevent sliding.

Papyr looks quite similar to the Sony DPT from the outside. The back of Papyr is of a  soft finish, which looks as if made out of aluminum, instead of plastic.

Overall design of the Quirk Logic Papyr  and reMarkable 2 is stylish and very minimalist. I find the reMarkable 2 a bit more appealing when it comes to design probably because it thinner.

reMarkable 2

  • Its the thinnest E Ink Tablet in the market (4.7 mm)
  • It  has a white frame with a silver-accented grip strip and a thicker lower bezel
  • Its lesser thickness makes it feel more nimble while holding

Quirk Logic Papyr

  • The device is 6.3 mm thick and when compared to reMarkable 2 it feels quite thick
  • Despite the size it weights only around 335g and thats astoundingly light
  • The aluminum frame gives the device a very premium feel when holding.

Display

Both displays have a paper-like texture that mimics real paper and are glare-free. However the contract and greyscale of the Papyr than the reMarkable 2.

The Quirk Logic Papyr has a  13.3 inch E-Ink Carta screen with a resolution of 2200 x 1650 and 207 PPI. Though the PPI may seem less when compared to smaller sized E Ink Tablet but it is somewhat of a standard in 13.3 inch or A4 sized devices.

reMarkable 2

  • The reMarkable screen uses their patented CANVAS technology. The screen has more fiction and paper like feel to it.
  • However it is made of glass making it a bit heavier and prone to damage.
  • The device lacks a backlit screen or warm lights.
  • Screen has a textured finish that mimics real paper.

Quirk Logic Papyr

  • The Refresh Rate is quite slow and you can feel it while scrolling
  • This device lacks a backlit screen and adjustable warm lights.

Stylus

The Remarkable 2 stylus needs to be purchased separately. You can buy the standard marker or the Marker Plus.  Both the styluses have a very natural feel to them.

On the other hand, the Papyr comes with the Pen in the box. The biggest downside is that this device isnt compatible with other Wacom Styluses

reMarkable 2

  • The standard Marker costs $79 and the Marker Plus with an eraser costs $129
  • Tilt detection & accurate pressure sensitivity makes I writing highly enjoyable.
  • The eraser tip at the end feels like real rubber and is really responsive on the marker plus.
  • The cardboard stylus tip give it that peculiar pencil over paper like feel but it requires frequent replacements.

Quirk Logic Papyr

  • Papyr Pen has two buttons on the shaft for erasing and highlighting
  • The Pen is’nt pressure or tilt sensitive
  • The Pen uses the Active EMR Technology meaning the battery needs to be charged periodically

Note Taking

The Remarkable 2 has a minimalistic UI with decent templates and pen options but the writing experience is out of the world.

On the other hand the user interface of Papyr is designed to be intuitive and efficient, allowing for a super-fast and agile workflow. Real-time collaboration is a standout feature, enabling seamless teamwork and eliminating the need for cumbersome steps like saving and sharing.

With Papyr, you can work collaboratively and experience a level of speed and agility that surpasses traditional methods.

I think writing experience can be a bit subjective but in my opinion Remarkable is the winner when it comes to the writing feel whereas Papyr has better note sharing and collaboration.

reMarkable 2
  • Offers 51 templates for  note-taking
  • The pages can be layered and tagged individually which helps in better organization.
  • Great Pen Response, different tips and pens styles, pressure and tilt sensitivity make the note taking experience premium.
  • Handwriting recognition and convert to text are available. I found the results surprisingly accurate.
  • You can take your notes directly on PDFs pages.
  • Allows you to sign into cloud storage accounts like OneDrive and Dropbox for immediate access to your documents.

Quirk Logic Papyr

  • Notes organization is in multi-page workbooks which can be organized in folders making it great.
  • There is only one brush; the thickness and color can be changed
  • Workbooks have ‘infinite zoom’ which means the canvas can be expanded dynamically
  • The Papyr does not support handwriting recognition

Reading

When it comes to reading experience, the Papyr is far better than reMarkable 2

reMarkable 2

  • Supports ePUB, PDF and Word documents.
  • For annotating files are converted to PDF. But the good thing is you can take notes directly on PDFs.
  • There is no backlight so you cant read at night.
  • No in build dictionary
  • No preinstalled book store, it means dragging and dropping EPUB files manually.
  • You can also add sticky notes directly to Word docs, and from later this year you’ll be able to send documents to the Scribe from within Microsoft Word.
  • Bigger sized files lag alot and give a poor reading experience.
Quirk Logic Papyr
  • The native reading app an run PDF, EPUB and MOBI files.
  • EPUB and MOBI files cannot be annotated
  • To annotate a PDF, it must be imported as a QLW file – which can then be exported as a PDF again.
  • The Papyr supports split-screen view which is a great feature to have.

Hardware & Software

The reMarkable 2 was launched in 2020 and the hardware a year older when compared to Papyr but still packs and punch. The devices has its own tailored OS and run on Linux. It adopts a pared-back approach, with clean visuals, tidy menus and neat icons for switching tools.

On the other hand Hardware of Quirk Logic Papyr is the same as used in Sony DPT and the device was launched in 2021. Quirk Logic Papyr runs android , however Google play store is not supported so 3rd party apps cannot be installed in the device.

reMarkable 2

  • The reMarkable 2 has a dual-core processor with 1Gb RAM.
  • The storage is only 8Gb which can be a problem for some people.
  • Doesn’t have Bluetooth.
  • It doesnt have G sensor or light sensor.

Quirk Logic Papyr

  • It has 1.2Ghz quad-core processor and 2 GB Ram
  • The storage is around 16 GB which is quite enough.
  • Features like backlit screens, g sensors, speakers and microphone are missing

Price

In terms of pricing, the Remarkable 2 is more affordable. However, when you factor in the cost of a stylus, the minimum price for the Remarkable 2 Increases significantly.

reMarkable 2

  • The Remarkable 2 has a single version with 8 GB of non-expandable storage.
  • However, the tablet doesn’t come with a stylus in the box. You can opt for the standard or premium Marker for additional cost.
  • Remarkable charges a monthly subscription fee if you want to use the “connect” feature.

Quirk Logic Papyr

  • The Papyr can only be purchased new from Quirklogic
  • The official Quirklogic website is QUIRKLOGIC.COM

Final Verdict

In my opinion both the devices are great but target a different user altogether.

If you want something simple, minimalistic and distraction free to jot down your thoughts, take notes, sketch or just doodle then reMarkable 2 is the device for you.

Whereas if you work requires reading a lot of PDFs and annotating and research or want a larger screen to write on then Quirk Logic Papyr is’nt a bad option to go for.
